Basic Kicks

  1. Mei-Geri or Straight Forward Kick…Seisan Dachi left foot forward… Right foot four count straight forward kick with ball of foot.
  2. Forward on Angle Kick…Seisan Dach left foot forward... Right foot chamber right foot at left knee, right foot strikes at knee angle blade kick.
  3. Kake Geri or Crossover Kick…Seasan Dachi left foot forward… Right foot lift over knee cross over kick to opponents knee, calf, or to opponent if taken down.
  4. Yoku-Geri or Side Blade Kick…Seisan Dachi left foot forward… Right foot chambers at left knee, foot bladed kick to opponent’s knee, groin, or ribs. In sport, the kick is higher to head.
  5. Soba Geri or Side Kick…Seisan Dachi left foot forward… Right foot chambers at left knee, and right knee covers groin, kick is similar to straight forward kick but goes to the right side, strike is with ball of right foot.
  6. Squat Kick is a self defense evasive kick perfected by Tatsuo Shimabuku. As the attacker advances, the defender move to side (in this case to the left) The stance is deep to the left and the right foot chambers at the left knee and iks directed to the opponent’s groin.
  7. Uchiro Geri orBack Kick… is done in either two Dachis Seaisan Dachi Left foot forward right foot chambers at left knee and is thrust backwards to opponent’s groin on knee. The other starting position is from feet together right foot chambers at left knee and is thrust backwards to opponents groin or knee. It is important that the defender identify the target before executing this kick.
  8. Toe Rip Kick is another kick perfected by Tatsuo Shimabuku, as the opponent grabs the defender by the arms, clothing. The defender grabs under the attackers fore arms rising their right foot and curling the toes down thrusting the toes into the opponents groin. The US Marines that train with Shimabuku stated that they did not go bare foot so it was modified as a thrust kick with boots into groin.
  9. Hiza Geri or Knee Drive Kick…Seisan Dachi left foot forward… Right Knee is thrust into opponents groin, right foot toes face down.

  2. Step forward with right foot…uppercut with right hand to chin (agi-suki)
  3. Step forward with right foot…punch left hand to solar plexus (seiken)
  4. Step forward with right foot…uppercut left hand to chin (agi-suki)
  5. Step back with right foot…down block with left hand…seiken punch right hand
  6. Step back with right foot…chu-dan-uki block left hand…seiken punch right hand
  7. Step back with right foot…shuto/bigge block left hand…nukite spear hand right
  8. Step back with right foot…shuto/bigge block left hand high…uppercut punch right
  9. Step back with right foot…jo-dan-uki block left hand…seiken punch right hand
  10. Step forward with right foot…elbow block right with back fist to nose…seiken to solar plexus (reiken) (seiken)
  11. Step forward with right foot…ge-dan-uki right hand block…five seiken left, right, left, right, left to solar plexus terminology: ge-dan-uki go (5) seiken punches
  12. Step forward with right foot…chu-dan-uki right hand block…five seiken left, right, left, right, left to solar plexus terminology: chu-dan-uki go (5) seiken punches
  13. Step forward with right foot…right shuto down block…left shuto strike to neck
  14. Step back right foot…shotei uki palm heel block left…u-uchi strike to solar plexus.. right u-uchi strike to kidneys or back,
  15. Step back with right foot neko achi dachi (cat stance)…right elbow strike (empi uchi)…simultaneous left rising elbow block.
  16. Same as basic number 9 with 5 (go) punches, our dojo number sixteen.

San Bon Kumite is also known as Tatsuo’s Kumite, and should be done with enthusiasm.

(A) Attacker (D) Defender

A.- First set of San – Bon Kumite sequences.

1st sequence: (Inside Block Hard Fist)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right upper lunge punch to head.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Jo Dan Uke (upper block).
  • (A) Step forward left seisan, left upper lunge punch to head.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan, right J Dan Uke (upper block).
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right upper lunge punch to head.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Jo Dan Uke (upper block), then counter with right seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.
2nd sequence: (Inside Block Hard Fist)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right straight forward seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Chu Dan Uke (middle block).
  • (A) Step forward left seisan, left straight forward seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan, right Chu Dan Uke (middle block).
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right straight forward seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step beck left foot forward seisan, left Chu Dan Uke (middle block), then counter with right seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.
3rd sequence: (Inside Block Hard Fist)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, then right downward lunge seiken punch to groin.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Ge Dan Uke (lower block).
  • (A) Step forward left seisan, then left downward lunge seiken punch to groin.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan, right Ge Dan Uke (lower block).
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, then right downward lunge seiken punch to groin.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Ge Dan Uke (lower block), then counter with right seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.

B.- Second set of San – Bon Kumite sequences sweeping open hand blocks.

1st sequence: (Inside Block Open Hand Soft)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right upper lunge punch to head.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left high sweeping (biggee block).
  • (A) Step forward left seisan, right upper lunge punch to head.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan, right high sweeping (biggee block).
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right upper lunge punch to head.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left high sweeping (biggee block), then counter with right Agi Zuki (upper cut) punch to throat.
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.
2nd sequence: (Inside Block Open Hand Soft)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right straight forward seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left sweeping middle (biggee block).
  • (A) Step forward left seisan, left straight forward seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan, right sweeping middle (biggee block)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right straight forward seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left sweeping middle (biggee block), then counter with right nukite (spear hand) punch to solar plexus.

  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right downward lunge seiken punch to groin.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left shuto downward block.

C.- Third set of San – Bon Kumite sequences Fist Blocks ending with 5 punches

1st sequence: (Inside Block Hard Fist)
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right upper lunge seiken punch to head.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Jo Dan Uke (upper block).
  • (A) Step forward left seisan, left upper lunge seiken punch to head.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan, right Jo Dan Uke (upper block).
  • (A) Step forward right seisan, right upper lunge seiken punch to head.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan, left Jo Dan Uke (upper block), then counter with five (5) punches to solar plexus. (right, left, right, left, right)
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.

1st sequence: (parry block down)
  • (A) Step forward right Seisan dachi, right Seiken punch to solar plexus
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan dachi, left downward parry block.
  • (A) Step forward left Seisan dachi, left Seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back right foot forward seisan dachi, right downward parry block.
  • (A) Step forward right Seisan dachi, right Seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan dachi, left downward parry block, then right Ureiken (back fist punch) to bridge of nose.
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.
2nd sequence: (shjotei uke/push strike block)
  • (A) Step forward right Seisan dachi, with right Seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward Seisan dachi, left Shotei Uke (side push block).
  • (A) Step forward left Seisan dachi, with left Seiken punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward Seisan dachi, right Shotei Uke(side push block).
  • (A) Step forward right, with right Seisan punch to solar plexus.
  • (D) Step back left foot forward seisan dachi, left Shotei Uke(side push block) then scoot step right U Uchi strike to Solar plexus(or floating ribs) followed by left U Uchi strike to Back or Kidneys.
  • Then reverse sequence where Defender now attacks.
Article I. The dojo is where the individual's physical and mental condition is trained.
A. Believe that there is a God and human beings are his children. (Believe in your own faith, but respect the rights of others to believe in their's.)
B. Military art (budo) begins with a salute and ends with the same.
C. Students and teachers bow to the protecting God (kamisama) of Isshinryu and be nice to each other.
Article II. Devote one's mental concentration and practice sincerely during the course of training.
Article III. Smoking and drinking are prohibited while training.
Article IV. Take good care of equipment used in training.
Article V. Students be respectful to their teachers and teachers be courteous to their students and guide them properly. Juniors/Seniors (Kohai/ Sempai).
Article VI. Violators of the above codes will be dismissed from the dojo.
